[2024 January 1st] Happy New Year 2024

As I promised, here is the minetestmapper image of the temporary server world. Here go some numbers: the world database size reached 1 GB, minetestmapper used about 4 GB of RAM to generate the image which is 24k x 31k pixels and has a size of 25 MB. The image on this post is scaled down by a factor of 8, but you can download the original and see if your computer can actually open it (mine cannot). Last but not least, I would like to thank you for sticking around and wish you the best for 2024!

[2023 October 2nd] FreedomTest 3rd Anniversary

After some delay it is finally here, the server's 3rd anniversary celebration post! This year we have a nice timelapse of the spawn overview as it has evolved from 2021 to 2022. This was provided by player MooseMan, you can download the full-quality version here. He has also provided some screenshots for the gallery section, so check those out and remember you can send your own submissions to my email address. The spawn overview generation has been fixed as well, it required compiling minetestmapper from source and some modifications to the scripts, now the server will shutdown every Sunday at 00:00 UTC for the generation to take place and after that finishes the server will restart. This is needed because the huge world size means the overview generation takes very long and thus cannot be done while the server is running. Last but not least, I prepared a special event for veteran players (and maybe new as well) to enjoy: the temporary world used during the server failure in 2021 will be online until November 1st 00:00 UTC, it is going to run in the original Pentium 4 server with old Minetest and all. Just like that time, I will share a minetestmapper image of the whole world when the server shuts down. There are quite a few interesting builds near spawn which you should check out if you never played in this world, also make sure to leave your mark on it before it goes away ;)
You can join the server at freedomtest.ddns.net:30001 or just look for "FreedomTest Anniversary" in the server list. That is all for now, hope you enjoy!

[2022 December 30th] Server updates to celebrate the new year

Right on time before the year ends FreedomTest is receiving some updates!
There are 3 new mods and the death messages mod is fixed and back. Additionally the server now runs on Minetest 5.6.1, which comes with many improvements in performance and functionality. The new mods are redtrees (two new types of trees), party (chat channels) and hbsprint (allows sprinting while pressing the special key, by default it is "E"). There is an online guide for the party chat commands which you should read to understand how they work. To celebrate the holidays the spawn overview has been updated. Not so fun fact: generating the spawn overview took roughly an hour and a half. That is all for now, have nice holidays!

[2022 September 15th] FreedomTest is on its 2nd Anniversary!

Just yesterday the server became 2 years old, and it feels as if the day before it was just 1 year old, time flies!
There have been no announcements since January of this year, the reason for this is that I have been working on the infrastructure that supports the server, rather than the server itself. Among the upgrades that have been made around are the replacement of the old router with an OpenWRT router, new network cables and a rack for the server equipment, just to name a few. However there is still work to do, as the UPS battery died in December last year and I have not been able to get the UPS working again, which is part of the reason why the spawn overview in the statistics section has not been updated anymore. The goals for the server before 2023 arrives are to get the UPS operational again, update the Minetest server to the latest version, add some new mods that have been on the wait list and fix more bugs. This of course requires time and money investments, so it would be appreciated if you check out the donations section. Since the rise of players thanks to YouTube the world database has also grown a lot, it is 9 GB as of today and generating the spawn overview while the server is running is no longer possible due to the size of the database file, nor is it safe since the UPS is not available, hence the only way to do it is shutting down the server temporarily. Because of that the spawn overview will not be updated anymore except on special occasions like this one until a solution is found. There will be more announcements in the upcoming months so stay tuned.

[2022 January 29th] Mod additions

4 new mods are being added to the server this weekend, in no particular order they are: nether, touch, death messages and headanim. Most of the names are self-explanatory, however the touch mod's may not be, what it does is that when a player is somewhere very dark and punches a node using bare hands the node will glow for 5 seconds, this way it is possible to get out of a dark place when there are no light sources available. Source code repositories for the aforementioned mods are available in the credits section; I would also like to thank Grubler for the mod suggestions. Apart from the mod additions, there was a tweak to the floatlands generation noise parameters, now the floating islands will be smaller but tighter and closer together, forming a chain of interconnected islands that can be used to travel or build very high up in the sky, try to find some floatlands yourself!
